The leaves are covered in small glandular hairs that produce sticky, dew-like droplets, which attract and trap small insects.

Cape Sundews are carnivorous plants native to the Cape region of South Africa, where they grow in wet, nutrient-poor conditions. Their sticky leaves trap and digest small insects, allowing the plant to supplement the nutrients it does not receive from the soil.

Sundews grow best in bright, indirect light with consistently moist, but never soggy, growing conditions. Water only with distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water, as they are sensitive to minerals found in tap water. Plant them in a nutrient-poor medium such as sphagnum moss or a mix of peat moss and perlite, and avoid standard potting soils or added fertilizers. They grow best in temperatures between 10–24°C.
