Rex Begonias are colourful foliage plants grown for their bold, intricately patterned leaves rather than their flowers. Depending on the variety, the foliage may feature combinations of green, silver, pink, red, burgundy, or purple with dramatic veining, spirals, and contrasting margins. Their compact growth habit makes them a great choice for shaded mixed planters, tabletop containers, and adding colour to garden beds without relying on blooms.

Rex Begonias grow best in bright, indirect light to part shade with loose, well-drained soil. Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, but avoid soggy conditions. They prefer higher humidity and protection from strong afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage. They can also be brought indoors and grown as houseplants over winter if given plenty of bright, indirect light.
