Birch River
Betula nigra
River Birch is one of the more adaptable birches, as it is more heat- and drought-tolerant than other varieties. It also adapts well to clay soils and tolerates poor drainage. It features salmon-tan to reddish-brown exfoliating bark and green leaves that turn yellow in fall.
Birches grow best in full to part sun with moist, well-drained soil. Consistent moisture is important, especially when young, as they will not tolerate dry soils for long. We recommend applying a layer of mulch around the root system to help conserve soil moisture.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available May through August, depending on suppliers availability.
