Black Chokeberry

Black Chokeberry is a shrub native to Ontario that offers interest in three seasons. In spring, glossy green leaves emerge and are followed by clusters of small white flowers that attract pollinators. These flowers develop into dark blue to nearly black berries with a tart, slightly sweet flavour. The fruit is commonly used for preserves, jams, and pies, though it can also be eaten fresh. In fall, the foliage turns vibrant shades of orange and red.

Black Chokeberry is one of the easiest fruiting shrubs to grow, with excellent cold hardiness and very few serious pest or disease problems. Its adaptability and reliable fruit production make it a great choice for both edible and native gardens.

For wildlife, Black Chokeberry provides food and shelter for birds and pollinators and serves as a larval host for more than 20 species of butterflies and moths.
