Black Gum
Nyssa sylvatica
Black Gum is a slow-growing deciduous tree native to Ontario. The inconspicuous flowers that are produced in spring are an excellent nectar source for bees. The glossy green leaves turn a brilliant scarlet red in the fall. If male and female trees are grown together, the female trees will produce dark blue, bitter fruits that are eaten by birds.
Black Gum grows best in full to part sun with moist, acidic soil. It tolerates poor drainage and can even grow in standing water, but will also tolerate some drought and can adapt to drier soils. It has a long taproot and should not be transplanted once established.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available April through June, depending on suppliers availability.
