Black Walnut
Juglans nigra
Black Walnut is a large deciduous tree native to Ontario. It is capable of producing edible walnuts that ripen in the fall. The nuts are eaten by squirrels, but be careful, the husks can stain! Black Walnuts are also the larval host for over 125 Lepdoptera species.
Be careful where you are planting, many walnut species produce a chemical called juglone, which can inhibit the growth of certain plant species.
Black Walnuts grow best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. They are intolerant of shade and cannot be transplanted once established due to their large taproot.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available April through August, depending on suppliers availability.

Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun)
Water every 2-4 days for the first year until established (based on outdoor temperature & plant's water consumption).
Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.
