Blackberry 'Baby Cakes®'
Rubus x 'APF-236T'
Baby Cakes® is a dwarf, thornless variety that produces large, sweet-tasting berries in July, and will sometimes produce a second crop that ripens in September.
Blackberries are self-fertile, and only one variety is needed to produce fruit.
Baby Cakes® is a primocane fruiting variety, which means it produces berries at the tips of first-year canes in the fall and again the next spring. Prune the dried-up tips that have produced your fall crop in late winter, and then prune the rest of the cane back after the berries ripen in midsummer.
Blackberries grow best in full to part sun with slightly acidic, moist, fertile, well-drained soil.
Despite their compact size suiting container growing, we do not recommend overwintering blackberries in containers as they are unlikely to survive in our zone. They are hardy in our zone when planted directly in the ground.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available May through August, depending on suppliers availability.
Characteristics
Hardiness: Zone 4
Bee-Friendly, Does Not Require Cross-Pollination, and Disease-Resistant
Care
Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun)
Water every 2-4 days for the first year until established (based on outdoor temperature & plant's water consumption).
If it is planted in a pot, it should have a drainage hole to reduce the likelihood of root rot caused by water accumulating in the bottom of the pot.
Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.
