Bougainvillea
Bougainvillea sp.
Bougainvillea is a vigorous tropical plant known for its vibrant, papery bracts that surround small, inconspicuous flowers. Its sprawling, climbing growth habit makes it a striking choice for large containers, trellises, fences, and sunny patio displays.
Bougainvillea grows best in full sun with well-drained soil and prefers to dry slightly between waterings. It thrives in heat and produces the best colour with plenty of direct sunlight. In our climate, it is grown as an annual outdoors but can be brought indoors for winter if given a very bright location.
Seasonal Availability: Typically May through June
Characteristics
3'-8' tall, 1'-4' wide
Flowering
Care
Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun)
Keep soil moist, but not soggy.
If it is planted in a pot, it should have a drainage hole to reduce the likelihood of root rot caused by water accumulating in the bottom of the pot.
Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.
