Castor Bean 'Red'
Ricinus communis var. gibsonii
The Gibson's (or red) Castor Bean features dark red-bronze foliage and small, somewhat insignificant, ivory-coloured flowers that turn into rounded, scarlet-red, spiky seed balls. It is a large annual that can reach 3'-5' tall.
Castor Bean is a fast-growing tropical annual with huge, deeply lobed leaves that give it a bold, dramatic appearance. Its impressive height and architectural foliage make it an excellent choice for adding privacy, structure, or a tropical feel to large planters and garden beds.
Castor Bean grows best in full sun with rich, well-drained soil and regular watering. It thrives in heat and can grow very quickly through the summer.
All parts of the plant, especially the seeds, are highly toxic if ingested.
Seasonal Availability: Typically May through June

Care
Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun)
Keep soil moist, but not soggy.
If it is planted in a pot, it should have a drainage hole to reduce the likelihood of root rot caused by water accumulating in the bottom of the pot.
Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.
