Catnip
Nepeta cataria
Catnip is a perennial plant in the mint family that can produce a euphoric response in cats.
Harvest your Catnip as needed throughout the growing season. If you would like to harvest a large amount, wait until the plant begins to bloom and cut all the stems back to the ground.
Catnip grows best in full sun and is not particularly fussy about soil types. You can allow the top of the soil to dry out before watering again.
We recommend planting Catnip in containers, as it can grow aggressively in the ground. Remove flowers before they set seed to stop any unwanted spread.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available April through June, depending on suppliers availability.
Characteristics
Hardiness: Zone 3
Does Not Require Cross-Pollination
Care
Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun)
Let top 1-2" dry out before watering again.
If it is planted in a pot, it should have a drainage hole to reduce the likelihood of root rot caused by water accumulating in the bottom of the pot.
Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.
