Chokeberry 'Ground Hug®'
Aronia melanocarpa 'UCONNAM012'
Ground Hug® is a dwarf variety of chokeberry that has a low, sprawling growth habit, making it an excellent groundcover for tough areas of the garden. Small, white flowers appear over the glossy green foliage in late spring/early summer and develop into dark purple berries by fall. The flowers are loved by pollinators, while the bitter berries make a tasty treat for birds, or use them to make jams and/or jellies.
Chokeberries spread by producing suckers and larger varieties are best planted where they will have space to grow, though you can restrain the growth though pruning.
Chokeberry is a very tolerant shrub, but grows best in full to part sun with average, well-drained soil. However, it can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions including boggy and dry.
