Clematis 'Sea Breeze'

Vancouver™ Sea Breeze is a clematis variety with a long bloom time. The pale lavender flowers sometimes have a rosy-pink tone to them. It blooms early to late summer. 

Clematis are one of the few plants that appreciate being planted deeply. The first set of leaf nodes should be below the soil line; this helps protect the crown over the winter. 

Clematis grow best in full to part sun (the best flowering is achieved in full sun) with moist, well-drained, alkaline soil. They dislike heavy clay soils and will not tolerate drought, especially during hot summer days. Clematis don't do well with competition, so make sure the area around their root systems is free of weeds and other plants.

Care

Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun) and Part shade outdoors (4 hours of direct sun)

Water every 1-3 days for first year until established (based on outdoor temperature & plant's water consumption).

Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.

Clematis are divided into 3 pruning groups. Sea Breeze is in group 2: large-flowered hybrids. These typically flower in early summer on the previous years growth, with some types flowering again in late summer on new growth. These require a light pruning in late winter/early spring to remove dead wood and any spindly or damaged growth. After the first bloom in early summer, prune back some stems to a large bud or a side shoot below the flowers.

Alternatively, you can also leave these unpruned for 3-4 years and then give them a hard pruning to 1-3 ft. from the ground in late winter/early spring.
