Coneflower Pale Purple
Echinacea pallida
Pale Purple Coneflower is a tall, flowering perennial with a somewhat debated native status in Ontario. Some sources consider it native, while others place its natural range just outside the province. Regardless, it is an exceptionally low-maintenance, easy-to-grow perennial that adds distinctive summer interest while providing valuable food for wildlife.
In early summer, tall flower stems emerge with narrow, drooping pinkish-purple petals surrounding prominent brown centres. The blooms provide nectar and pollen for butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. If the spent flowers are left standing, their seed heads also provide food for birds later in the season.
Coneflowers grow best in full sun with average, well-drained soil. Like many prairie perennials, Pale Purple Coneflower can become floppy when grown on its own, so surrounding plants or staking can help support the tall flower stems.
Seasonal Availability: Typically May to July, depending on suppliers availability.
