Cucamelon/Mexican Sour Gherkin
Melothria scabra
Cucamelon is a small, vining plant that produces 1" long fruits that look like miniature watermelons. The taste is similar to a cucumber, but with a light citrus note.
Harvest your Cucamelons when they are still small, no more than 1" long. Make sure you harvest them regularly so your plant keeps producing. Cucamelons are not as productive as regular cucumbers, so you may want to grow more than one plant.
Cucamelons grow best in full sun with fertile, moist, well-drained soil. A lover of heat, don't plant them until the soil and nighttime temperatures are reliably warm. Since this is a vining plant, it will require support (trellis, fence, etc.) to grow. Avoid overhead watering as this can encourage Powdery Mildew.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available April through June, depending on suppliers availability.
Characteristics
Hardiness: Non-Hardy/Annual
Does Not Require Cross-Pollination
Care
Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun)
Keep soil moist, but not soggy.
If it is planted in a pot, it should have a drainage hole to reduce the likelihood of root rot caused by water accumulating in the bottom of the pot.
Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.
