Cup Plant
Silphium perfoliatum
Cup Plant is a tall, distinctive perennial native to Ontario. Beginning in midsummer, it produces bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. If the spent blooms are left standing, they develop seeds that are eaten by many bird species. One of its most unique features is the way the leaves join around the stem, forming shallow cups that collect rainwater and can provide a drinking source for birds and other wildlife.
Cup Plant grows best in full sun with moist, well-drained soil. It can tolerate some drought, but performs best with consistent moisture. Because of its height, the stems can become top-heavy and may flop, especially when grown alone. Planting in groups or providing support can help keep the growth upright.
Seasonal Availability: Typically May to August, depending on suppliers availability.
