Currant Black 'Ben Tirran'

Ben Tirran is a cold-hardy, late-yielding variety that produces medium-sized, slightly tart, flavourful, juicy dark purple to black berries. The flowers are produced later than those of other varieties, which protects them from late frosts that damage buds. Black Currants are best eaten after cooking, as raw berries are quite tart. 

Currants are self-fertile but will produce larger yields when planted with a different variety that flowers at the same time. It can take currants 4-5 years to become well-established and start producing full crops. 

Currants grow best in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soils.

Currants and gooseberries are hosts for a disease called white pine blister rust. If you live near or are growing pines, it is not recommended to plant currants or gooseberries unless they are resistant to the disease.
