Currant Red 'Red Lake'

Red Lake is a compact variety that produces clusters of large, juicy, flavourful, bright red currants. The berries can be eaten fresh or used in baking, cooking, or drinks. Red Lake is moderately resistant to powdery mildew. 

Currants are self-fertile but will produce larger yields when planted with a different variety that flowers at the same time. It can take currants 4-5 years to become well-established and start producing full crops. 

Currants grow best in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soils.

Gooseberries and currants are hosts for a disease called white pine blister rust. If you live near or are growing pines, it is not recommended to plant currants or gooseberries unless they are resistant to the disease.
