Redbud Eastern
Cercis canadensis
Eastern Redbud is a small, deciduous, flowering tree native to Ontario. In the spring, small pink flowers cover the bare branches and stems, providing an early food source for pollinators. After flowering, large, heart-shaped, green leaves emerge and remain for the summer before turning yellow and dropping in the fall. Small, flat, brown seed pods develop and provide a winter food source for wildlife. Eastern Redbud is also the larval host for several butterfly and moth species.
Redbuds grow best in full to part sun with fertile, moist, well-drained soils. They dislike heavy, poorly-drained soils and do best with consistent moisture.
