Endive Belgian
Cichorium intybus 'Bingo'
Bingo is an improved variety of Belgian Endive with more uniform root sizing, resistance to root core browning and Powdery Mildew.
To achieve the blanched heads or "chicon", you will need to follow a two-stage growing regimen—first, plant in a location that receives full sun and has fertile, loose, well-draining soil. Allow plants to grow over the summer and keep the area weeded. Try to keep the soil evenly moist without being soggy; dry soils can cause bitterness. In mid/late fall, after a few light frosts, dig the roots up and keep them in cold storage for 6-10 weeks. After that, you can place the roots into a large, deep pot filled with a light potting mix, leaving about an inch of the root sticking out. Lightly water the soil and keep them in a warm place in complete darkness; any light will cause the chicon to become bitter. Harvest once they reach the desired size.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available April through June, depending on suppliers availability.

Care
Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun)
Keep soil moist, but not soggy.
If it is planted in a pot, it should have a drainage hole to reduce the likelihood of root rot caused by water accumulating in the bottom of the pot.
Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.
