Fireweed
Chamaenerion angustifolium
Fireweed is a striking perennial native to Ontario. In summer, it produces tall spikes of flat, purple-pink flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. It can spread readily by both seed and rhizomes, making it best suited to prairies, meadows, and other larger naturalized areas, though seedlings are generally easy to pull if unwanted.
Fireweed grows best in full sun with rich, well-drained, moist soil. In areas with hot summers, they appreciate afternoon shade.
Seasonal Availability: Typically May to July, depending on suppliers availability.
