Ground Cherry
Physallis peruviana 'Aunt Molly's'
Ground Cherry is an underappreciated edible that should be in everyone's vegetable garden. The fruits resemble tomatillos as they are grown inside a papery husk, but they mature to a golden-orange and drop from the plant when ripe. If stored in their husks, they can be kept for up to 3 months.
Ground Cherries grow best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially when fruits are forming.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available April through June, depending on suppliers availability.
