Ironweed Giant
Vernonia gigantea
Giant Ironweed is a tall, colourful perennial native to Ontario. In late summer, it produces an abundance of vivid purple flowers at the tops of sturdy stems, creating a strong display of colour while providing an important nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other late-season pollinators. Its impressive height makes it especially useful at the back of large perennial, meadow, or native gardens.
Giant Ironweed grows best in full sun with moist, well-drained soil and is particularly well suited to areas near streams, ponds, and other bodies of water. It can grow very tall, so cutting it back by about one-third in July can help keep the plant shorter, fuller, and less prone to flopping. Remove spent flowers before they go to seed if you want to prevent unwanted spread.
Seasonal Availability: Typically May to August, depending on suppliers availability.
