Japanese Maple 'Emperor I'
Acer palmatum 'Emperor I'
Emperor I is similar to the popular Bloodgood variety of Japanese Maple, but with a few differences. It grows slightly smaller, buds out about 2 weeks later in the spring, reducing the risk of damage from late spring frosts, holds its colour better in shade, and has longer leaf retention. Like Bloodgood, it has deep purple-red summer foliage that turns crimson-red in the fall.
Japanese maples have the best colour in morning sun and afternoon shade. They can tolerate full sun but may have some leaf scorching in late summer, especially in dry soil. Use mulch around the root system to hold in moisture and keep the roots cool.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available May through September, depending on suppliers availability.
