Leek 'Large Musselburg'
Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum 'Large Musselburg'
Large Musselburg is an heirloom variety that produces large, mild-tasting leeks.
Leeks can be harvested at any size, but are at maturity when they are around 1"-1.5" in diameter and 6"-10" in length. If you would like your leeks to have a white stem, mound soil, mulch, or straw around the stems as they grow.
Leeks grow best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture. If your soil drains poorly or is heavy, consider adding organic matter to break up the soil and improve drainage.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available March through June, depending on suppliers availability.
Characteristics
Hardiness: Non-Hardy/Annual
Does Not Require Cross-Pollination and Heirloom
Care
Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun)
Keep soil moist, but not soggy.
If it is planted in a pot, it should have a drainage hole to reduce the likelihood of root rot caused by water accumulating in the bottom of the pot.
Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.
