Lilac 'Ludwig Spaeth'
Syringa vulgaris 'Ludwig Spaeth'
Ludwig Spaeth Lilac produces panicles of very fragrant, large, dark reddish-purple flowers in mid-to-late spring. It was introduced in 1883 and is still an incredibly popular variety.
Lilacs grow best in full sun with moist, rich, alkaline soil with good drainage. Common Lilacs are prone to powdery mildew. Growing them in full sun, pruning them regularly to encourage airflow, and watering during drought can help reduce the chances of them developing the fungus.
