Living Stones
Lithops ssp.
Living Stones are a group of unusual succulents native to arid regions in southern Africa. These low-growing plants have evolved to mimic the rocks they grow alongside, camouflaging themselves. The fleshy leaves are excellent at storing water, allowing the plants to survive in dry, harsh conditions. With good care and strong light, they can produce small, daisy-like flowers, usually in shades of yellow or white.
Living Stones can be easy to care for, provided you have the right conditions and knowledge to grow them. They need lots of direct light and should be watered sparingly and only during their growing season, from fall through early spring. During their dormant season (late spring through summer), they should not be watered at all, even if they begin to wrinkle. During their leaf renewal period (late winter to early spring), they will start to push out two new leaves and begin to absorb the old ones. Do not start watering until the old leaves have fully dried, as the plant is absorbing water from them.
Plant your Living Stones in small, preferably terracotta, pots with gritty, well-draining soil that is low in organic matter. You may need to add perlite and pumice to increase drainage in the soil.
