Lotus 'American'
Nelumbo lutea
The American, or Yellow lotus, is the only native lotus in Ontario. They can be seen at Point Pelee National Park in marshy areas along the Lake Erie shoreline. They stretch from the most southern part of Ontario through South America. Populations are declining throughout the United States due to habitat destruction.
The sweet-scented blossoms are cup-shaped, creamy-yellow with bright yellow-gold centers. In natural marshes, they will do slightly deeper water and will get substantially larger.
Lotus grow and flower best with full sun and benefit from regular fertilization.
