Maple Red
Acer rubrum
Red maple is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to Ontario. It has a pyramidal form when young but develops a broad, somewhat rounded crown as it matures. In early spring, it produces clusters of small, red flowers that provide an early nectar source for pollinators. The foliage emerges with reddish tones in the spring before turning green by summer. The fall colour varies depending on soil pH and climate and can be brilliant red, yellow, or orange.
In addition to providing nectar for pollinators, red maples also provide shelter for wildlife and are a larval host for several moth species, including the Rosy Maple and Cecropia Silk moths.
Red maples grow best in full to part sun with acidic to neutral, moist, well-drained soil.
