Maple Silver
Acer saccharinum
Silver Maple is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree native to Ontario. The deeply lobed green foliage with silvery-white undersides turns pale yellow in the fall. Silver maples tend to form an irregular, open crown with arching branches, making them well suited to growing in large, open areas. As lovely as these trees are, they are generally not recommended for residential plantings due to their weaker wood, prolific seed production, and shallow root system. However, Silver maples are great for erosion control, provide food and shelter for birds and other wildlife and are a larval host for many species of butterflies and moths, including the Rosy Maple and Cecropia Silk moths.
Silver maples grow best in full sun with moist, well-drained soil. They're very adaptable to different conditions and will tolerate clay soils and flooding.
