Mini Jade
Portulacaria afra
Mini Jade, or Elephant Bush, is a succulent bonsai with small, rounded green leaves growing along thick, reddish-brown stems. Its naturally branching habit, tolerance of pruning, and ability to store water in its fleshy leaves and stems make it a resilient choice for bonsai, including for beginners.
Portulacaria afra Bonsai grows best in bright, direct to indirect light. Plant it in a well-draining bonsai or cactus/succulent mix and water only once the soil has dried out. Avoid overwatering, as it is prone to root rot in wet or soggy conditions.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available year-round, depending on supplier availability.
Characteristics
Upright
Can grow over 10" tall
Care
Bright, indirect to direct sun indoors
Let soil dry out almost completely before watering again. Your pot should have a drainage hole to reduce the likelihood of root rot caused by water accumulating in the bottom of the pot.
