Oak Chinquapin
Quercus muehlenbergii
Chinquapin Oak is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to Ontario. It's a great tree that is underutilized and fairly hard to find in nurseries. It has rich, dark green leaves and sweet, edible acorns and is tolerant of many different growing conditions, including drought. It's also highly valuable for wildlife, providing food and shelter as well as being the larval host for many species of butterflies and moths.
Chinquapin oaks grow best in full sun with neutral to alkaline, well-drained soil. They're tolerant of most conditions and will not develop chlorosis in high-pH soils.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available April through June, depending on suppliers availability.
