Birch Paper
Betula papyrifera
Paper Birch is a widely recognizable deciduous tree native to Ontario. It has distinctive peeling white bark and thin, green leaves that turn yellow in fall. It can be grown as a single-or multi-stemmed tree. It's valuable to wildlife, providing food and shelter to birds and small mammals as well as being the larval host for the Luna moth and Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly.
Paper Birches grow best in full to part sun with moist, acidic, well-drained soils. They can adapt to a wide range of conditions but require consistent moisture to stay healthy. They also tend to dislike heat and humidity and prefer areas with cool summers. Growing them in less-than-ideal conditions will shorten their lifespan and make them more prone to pests and disease.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available April through June, depending on suppliers availability.
