Peanuts
Arachis hypogaea
Did you know that Peanuts are actually a legume, and while the flowers and foliage are above ground, the peanut itself is grown underground. Though they require a long (120-150 days) time to grow, you can still get a decent harvest in our area.
Once the foliage begins to turn yellow and die down, usually around late September/early October, your peanuts are ready for harvesting! Carefully dig up the plant, shake off any excess soil from the roots, and give them a quick rinse to remove any stubborn dirt. Let them dry in a warm, shaded area with good air circulation for 2-3 weeks. Once the foliage becomes dry and crumbly, your peanuts are ready for storage. Raw peanuts can be stored for around 9 months when refrigerated.
Peanuts grow are a warm-season crop and need heat to grow. Plant them in an area with full sun and fertile, well-draining soil. If your soil is heavy clay, consider adding organic matter to improve soil drainage. Allow the soil to somewhat dry out between waterings, and let it fully dry out before you harvest.
