Pussy Willow

Pussy Willow is a large shrub (or small tree) that is native to Ontario. In early spring, female plants produce small green catkins while males produce the soft grey catkins that pussy willows are known for. Pussy willows are one of the first native plants to bloom in the spring and provide a valuable food source for early pollinators. Besides providing food, pussy willows are also the larval host for the Mourning Cloak and Viceroy butterflies. 

Pussy willows grow best in full sun with fertile, moist, well-drained soil. They are tolerant of wet conditions and will tolerate dry soil better than other willows. However, when young, their soil should be kept consistently moist to help them establish.
