Serviceberry Shadblow

Shadblow Serviceberry is a large multi-stemmed shrub/small tree native to Ontario. It produces pure-white flowers in spring that provide food for pollinators. The flowers give way to berries that mature a deep blue colour by June. The berries are loved by birds, including Cedar Waxwings, but can also be eaten by humans. In the fall, the green leaves turn shades of orangey-red. Serviceberries are also the larval host plant for many moth and butterfly species. 

Serviceberries grow best in full to part sun with moist, well-drained soil. They aren't fussy about soil types but have a preference for neutral to acidic soils and will only tolerate short periods of drought, preferring evenly moist soil.
