Snake Gourd
Trichosanthes cucumerina '#SN1717-869'
This is a high-yielding variety that produces an 18"-24" long bottle gourd with dark green skin and white stripes. The flesh is tender with a fresh flavour.
Harvest your snake gourd once it's at least 18" long and the flesh is still tender. If left too long the gourds can become woody and inedible. Pick the gourds regularly to keep your plant productive.
Snake Gourds grow best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Since it is a vine, it requires support (trellis, fence, stake, etc.) to grow.
Seasonal Availability: Typically available April through June, depending on suppliers availability.
Characteristics
Hardiness: Non-Hardy/Annual
Does Not Require Cross-Pollination
Care
Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun)
Keep soil moist, but not soggy.
If it is planted in a pot, it should have a drainage hole to reduce the likelihood of root rot caused by water accumulating in the bottom of the pot.
Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.
