Sneezeweed Common
Helenium autumnale
Common Sneezeweed is a flowering perennial native to Ontario. In late summer to fall, it produces masses of bright yellow, daisy-like flowers with raised golden to brown centres, providing an important late-season nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Fun Fact: The common name “Sneezeweed” comes from the historical use of its dried leaves and flowers in snuff. The powder was inhaled to induce sneezing, which was once believed to help rid the body of evil spirits.
Sneezeweed grows best in full sun with moist, well-drained soil and performs especially well in rain gardens, low areas, and near ponds or streams. It can tolerate average garden conditions as long as the soil does not become too dry. Taller plants may benefit from support or can be cut back earlier in the season to encourage shorter, bushier growth.
Seasonal Availability: Typically May to August, depending on suppliers availability.
