Spiderwort Ohio
Tradescantia ohiensis
Ohio Spiderwort is a flowering perennial native to Ontario. In late spring to early summer, clusters of three-petalled blue to violet flowers appear above narrow, grass-like foliage. The blooms have special value for native bees and other pollinators, and new flowers continue to open over an extended period.
Ohio Spiderwort grows best in full sun to part shade with average, well-drained soil. It is adaptable to a range of soil conditions and can tolerate some drought once established. It can spread aggressively in favourable conditions, so it is best suited to areas where some naturalizing is welcome. The foliage may decline or go dormant during hot summer weather, so pairing it with later-blooming perennials can help fill the space and maintain interest through the rest of the season.
Seasonal Availability: Typically May to August, depending on suppliers availability.
