Picea pungens 'Thume'

Thume is a dwarf variety of spruce that develops an irregular mounding shape as it matures. The blue needles retain their colour year-round, but are brightest in the spring when new growth emerges. 

Spruces grow best in full sun in rich, moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. They will tolerate light shade; too much shade will cause the needles to lose their colour and/or drop. Never let the soil fully dry out when the shrub is young, especially before winter. Protection is recommended over winter when newly planted.

Full sun outdoors (6-8+ hours of direct sun)

Water every 2-4 days for the first year until established (based on outdoor temperature & plant's water consumption).

Increase watering in the heat of summer and watch for wilting or browning as signs to increase watering frequency.

As a general rule we don't recommend pruning thume spruce as it maintains its shape on its own. However, if you do wish to prune them it should be done very lightly in early summer, and only to new growth. Be careful, if you cut too far back into the old growth you may end up with bare spots that won't recover. Any dying, diseased, or damaged branches can be removed at any time.
