Sumac Fragrant

Fragrant Sumac is a deciduous shrub that is native to Ontario. The small flowers that appear in spring are a food source for pollinators, while the berries (produced only by female plants) are a source of food for birds and small mammals over winter. It's also the larval host for the Banded Hairstreak butterfly. The green leaves are attractive all season, but turn shades of yellow, orange, purple and red in the fall. Its spreading root system is great for erosion control on slopes. 

Sumacs grow best in full to part sun in average, dry to moist, well-drained soil. The best fall colour and berry production will be in full sun. It's drought- and salt-tolerant once established.
